Do you prefer white cabinets or wood/oak type cabinets?

Dawn

Hi Dawn. Our cabinets are painted a green that was popular in the '70's. I want to paint them an off white, cream colour. If I was to sell our home, I would want to replace them with oak. I personally think oak is warm w/o being too dark and just brightens up a kitchen. Have noticed that some greens are coming back.

I have white, but would prefer wood, especially maple.
Some day we'll change them, but that is far off in the future.

We had maple in our last house. They were SO beautiful!!!! My husband custom made them himself and said he will never do that again as maple is such a hard/solid wood to work with.....but they were beautiful.

I just bought a new house and paid quite a bit extra to have cherry cabinets, hope its was worth it. I liked the grain in the cherry wood alot better then the standard oak ones

I prefer white cabinets because they help make the room lighter and brighter (and you need a lot of light in the kitchen!). Also, I like how white appliances blend in with white cabinets. It just looks better IMHO.

However, we bought a house with solid oak cabinets. Hubby doesn't want us to change them because "wood is timeless" and it would be a massive pain in the you-know-what to paint them. So now I'm stuck with appliances that stick out like a sore thumb. Luckily, the rest of the house is perfect so I'm willing to relent on this. I'm sure I'll be pickier when we shop for our next house.

I voted for wood, but I prefer any wood but oak. I can't stand the strong grain you see in oak.

I agree with rubytue -- I'm not a big fan of the pronounced grain in most oak cabinets; I associate that with homes built in the 90's (whether that's fair or not). My house had maple cabinets, and that seems to be popular and good for resale, but I actually find the blond maple rather bland. If I were choosing cabinets now, they would be a darker wood, like cherry or hickory, or a naturally light wood with a darker stain.

I'm also not a fan of melamine cabinets. I tend to associate these with apartments, as well as homes built in the 80s.

I'm a fan of bright, white kitchens, so white for me. Maple would be a second choice.

I like al lot of colors and woods, it really depends on the room - size, light, connection to other rooms ... The smaller the kitchen, the brighter the cabinets should be. I love dark wenge fronts too, but those need a lot of light and space. Also in small kitchens, simple slab or Shaker style fronts seem best whereas in large kitchens more details, panels, crown molding are possible without being too overwhelming.

In Europe you see more and more kitchens with different fronts - e.g. base cabinets = slab birch, wall cabinets = glossy white or aluminium frame with frosted glass. Fully integrated dishwashers and fridges are popular, as are smooth cooktops and wallovens, so you don't really see a lot of appliances.

One "problem" with kitchens - as with so many things today - is the abundance of styles to choose from.
