Went to Home Depot and Lowe's yesterday to look for ceiling fans for our new house. House already has them....but I want to change them...they are old and not my style. The 3 rooms that I want to put them in have high ceilings. The fans that are there already have remotes and they are working. I was surprised that there were so few ceiling fans available in the stores with remotes. The majority...and all the ones that I like...don't come with remotes..only the 2 long chains. I was surprised. When we bought the house that we just sold, we bought several ceiling fans with remotes....that was about 15 years ago...and there was a much bigger choice of fans.
Anybody have any idea why they don't seem to be making as many of the fans with remotes?
Remotes are an "add-on" to pretty much every fan these days. The "race to the bottom" on costs has made lots of manufacturers use the "optional upgrade" strategy with every little thing...
A lot of people don't like them. Usually because they misplace the remote. the wall switch never moves. I am one of them, I hate the remote, and the fan that came it.
As chet mentioned- you can buy an add-on device. They are compatible with every fan.
And I comprehend whirnot's statement however, with the use of universal remotes I call BS on that- or the people are too lazy/ignorant to program, or cheap to get the universal remote.
My so called movie room- the terrace level family room, I use 1(one) universal remote for the TV's (one big screen and 3 smaller), Cable boxes, A/V Receiver, CD/DVD player, lights, and power shades.
The bedroom uses one for the TV, Cable box, Stereo, Lights- yes, plural, (I even converted some fixtures to 'touch' technology), and fan.

My remote came with a holder to hang it on the wall. It works like a light switch but does not have to wired. Though we just leave it on the bedside table.

I remember when I first saw those and thought-
What the HELL! What good is a REMOTE when it's hanging on the wall and I'm in a chair or lying in bed. What were they thinkin'?

Oh right, they weren't!
In my case, it saved the cost of wiring the switch, which would have been a pain due to the way the house is constructed.
Many people use the wall holster just to keep from having to look for the remote.
We have remotes on our walls too for our ceiling fans and I HATE them. Plus the fans pick up other frequency's in the neighborhood and turn on and off on their own....anyone know how to REVERSE the fan so it doesn't need a remote? The fans themselves do not have and pull strings..just the remotes...so annoying and a terrible design...you should be able to do both. Any suggestions? I think they are Hunter Bay fans...
