The key is a latch that kids cannot open without an adult AND self closing hinges. Google "magna latch" and "true close hinges".

Of course the fence itself has to be "non- climbable" and spaced to prevent any little heads from poking through, building code should have details on that when you get your permit.

This is worth getting the permit ahead of time -- sucks to buy the wrong style balusters or boards...

I don't know about building a safety fence- but you could certainly buy one and install it yourself.

I have a very similar safety fence for my pool. It was good for about four yrs. after that, the kids could swim and the fear factor diminished. Besides, they never went in the backyard without us anyway.

That is the type I see here that people have had installed with a pool. Some do not have kids but have it because they have grand kids or friends with kids over at certain time of year. I personally would have one of I owned a pool just for this reason. The one I saw was easily removalable at other time when just adults were present.
