I am thinking of buying some very cheap shelving(I live in an apartment, and don't want to spend alot of money on cabinets and then have to move 6 months down the line). I found the product below, the question I have is that I assume that I will have to mount anything that will carry significant weight(dishes, pots etc) will need to be mounted to the studs. But how will I know that the mounting columns are in the correct location for this? Do I take it for granted that they are designed to be in the correct location?
Also does anybody else have any similar suggestions to the one below.
Looking at the shelf it does not look like they have planned for the uprights to be mounted to studs, since the total width is about 47 " and the uprights are inset in from the ends.
With a load capacity of 80+ pounds per shelf, you better make sure the uprights are securely mounted to the walls. If you could mount them to the studs it would be much stronger, but toggle bolts will work too.

How much extra weight will the toggle bolt allow? Won't the metal attachment still break the sheet rock but in this case through the other end?
It looks like there are at least 2 attachment points per upright, there may be three.
Two toggle bolts per upright would give you probably enough holding power provided you used the largest size that will fit thru the holes.
I have to assume that when they designed the unit, there was enough thought put in to the attachments so it would support the load they indicate. Follow the installation guidelines and you will be fine.
I love Ikea.
