We were on a party line still in the mid 80's. There were 6 on it originally. There were only 2 of the original 6 remaining on it up to about 1985. The other folks on it (neighbors) had been on it 35 years. We knew them well. They would sometimes come on the line and interrupt the conversation and say they needed to make a call. We would do the same.

I know people who grew up with no electricity and no indoor plumbing. Had a neighbor who built their house for an indoor bathroom, but never installed one. Just used the out house and that continued until they died and the house was sold. The former folks were still using an outhouse and a well in 1999 or so.
