Wow, BentBow, you really don't like the backerboard idea, huh? Ok, ok, I won't do it. Just don't hurt me

In his defense, the allexperts guy was just helping me within the parameters I laid out. I told him I definitely didn't want to demo the existing tiles. I guess he was just giving me the lesser of the evils. In the end, he did say that it was a better idea to remove the tiles.

Ok, so you guys are swaying me into just demoing the existing floor. 2 things.

1. Upon further inspection, the 9x9s feel similar to roofing material and I'm guessing this means they're asphalt. Does that sound right? Does this affect my ability to safely remove?

2. Is the crack repair and self-leveling compound application DIY friendly? Never worked with this stuff before.

3. I started pulling up some of the tiles and they are really stuck on there GOOD. I was thinking about renting one of those electric floor stripper things. Does this make the asbestos issue more dangerous? Any thoughts?

Thanks again for all the help. You guys are great.

Question. Is there a reason you HAVE to have ceramic tile.
Im thinking there are other alternatives that would look just as nice without all that hassle. How about floating floors. Theres wood and Ive also seen some that go down like laminate but look like tile.

How solid are your tiles. Could you add another layer. Check out these vinyl tiles.
