I know that they always say having a bathtub in a bathroom adds more value than having a stand-up shower only.
Eventually I will be building an addition onto the house. I plan on expanding the master bedroom and adding a master bathroom (currently only have 1 bathroom in the house, rather small, not for big families). I'm not a bathtub person at all, so I can do without. But in terms of resale - would it be the wrong move to create the master bath with a shower only?
The current bathroom, accessed thru the hall only, has a bathtub - albeit an old one. It would work fine for bathing a child or things like that, although I don't think an adult would find it very relaxing to sprawl out in for a glass of wine and a bubble bath.
Would it be a mistake to only do the shower? My thought is that when I build the addition, I want to do it nice - but will only have enough room for one "piece" - either a shower only, or else I'd have to do a generic bathtub/shower combo, which I don't think looks as spiffy as having a very cool walk-in shower with multiple nozzles, etc. Something along the lines of these....
If I were had to choose, I would definitely go with the shower only..and really do it up! they have those new fixtures that make your shower like a carwash!!! If you went high end shower in the master bath, it would be much better than the standard tub/shower situation. you might ask a local realtor. they are usually pretty up on what is available in your area.

I agree that a high end shower is preferable over a standard tub/shower combo. However, in a real estate listing, that bathroom would NOT be listed as a full bath! Today, it seems that many folks, especially working types, want a really good shower stall. While those tiny tiles are popular, when I look at them they shout "look at all the grout to clean!!". Go for big tiles, please, if you want to appeal to prospective buyers who clean their own bathrooms.
I'm planning to build a walk-in shower too. Does anyone know where I can find a piece of glass to serve as shower wall? The bathroom is only 5' x 6 1/2' and there is not space to build a shower wall. I thought glass will save a few inches of space. Thanks.
As long as there is a bathroom with a tub I think the shower only master is fine. My last house had just a sink and toilet in the master bath, would have loved a shower. This house has a separate garden tub and shower. We rarely use the tub.
Do the shower, a tub in a master is a planter box as far as I'm concerned, it is rarely used by homeowners I know that have them.
Here is what I did in my own home. The master bedroom and bath are on the 3rd floor and the existing bathroom size was only 4'8" wide by 8'2" long which had to stay that size due to ceiling and room space. It took my wife and I a couple of years to try to come up with something we now enjoy. The entire bath renovation took me 2 weeks to complete and the door took about 3 weeks to get etched and installed.
Thank you all for the replies! I have gotten the same advice about the mosaic tiles - they look great, but are hard to keep clean. I may need to re-think that and go for some slate or at least some bigger glass tile.
I do agree - I don't know a single person who takes a bath. But I watch all of the HGTV shows and it seems like EVERY person looking at houses HAS to have a bathtub and goes ga-ga over them. Who has the time in life to take so many baths?!
