Hi All -

I found this board, and it's full of a lot of great stuff - so, I decided to post -

So, I had this really nice furniture, my grandmothers, that is pretty old, and it was originally that weird sort of greenish/gold that I think was popular way back "in the day".

I had it stripped, and refinished, and it looks really great. And, I had it in my daughter's room, but after 3 years or so, it is really too big to fit in there, and I think I have to sell it.

Problems are:

1. I don't know what to "call" this style furniture, to even describe it
2. I don't know the value - I think it's got cherry wood parts - not sure -

Anyone have a good guess on either one?

Thanks!!

Jerry

Hey Scott- thanks for the Chippendale style info - as long as it's not ladies night -

And Fisher, I am not sure - I was trying to figure out it's value -
• Tall boy bureau
• long bureau
• short nightstand
• twin bed
• big mirror

As I mentioned, these were my grandmothers, and i wanted to restore them back to their natural wood - they are really pretty, but we sort of can't find a good use for them, and have sort of forced them into a small bedroom, that has become rather cramped , so, I am trying to sell them-

So, that's why I was looking to find out about them - I am not sure of their value

Jerry

It's probably from the 1950's or '60's, American factory-made in the style then referred to as "French Provincial." Very pretty.

Do not refinsh them. Most of the value is in the original finish. They look French Provincial to me. The original finsh makes them more valuable, even with scares and nicks. Try Ebay. For finding the value, maybe there is a web site or furniture values. Ebay may have some other pieces that are priced. they are pretty and I'm sure there is a market for it.

I agree. That's how my bedroom was decorated when I was a child. The walls were apple green and there were soft pink shutters on the windows. My mother had my christening dress hanging in a gilded frame on a soft pink velet background. That furniture could last a lifetime.

Definitely "French Provincial" style from the 50's....especially with the original painted finish that you described. They look very nice stripped and refinished.

Try searching Craigslist in other areas for similar type furniture to come close to a price.

When you place your ad, be sure the approximate age is noted. There was a resurgence of French Provincial in the last 15 years and you don't want to mislead your potential buyers.

Construction of the furniture and the wood will determine the value. This style was extremely popular, but was manufactured by high end and also very inexpensive lines. You should be able to tell from the wood grain and joints etc whether it's a sturdy substantial grade ...especially since it's been stripped. Take pictures of the drawer dovetailing and back and inside of drawers etc. if you're selling over the internet.

Good luck!

Do NOT rerfinish. If you do you LOSE all value. Sets sell better than single pueces. It has to be very old and very good condition before anyone will part with much money.Auctions, etc., are not moving much furniture.
