I'm considering a sofa for my recently renovated room. I only plan to keep this sofa for a couple of years.

The color options are light cream and deep forest green. I envision muddy dog foot prints on the cream, and white dog hair on the dark green. I'm trying to imagine which would be the worst of two evils. It almost seems easier to spot clean a cream sofa than keep dog hair off. I think the cream would allow for more decorating diversity, and I fear the dark green would feel too overpowering.

Also, which would look bigger? You know, when dressing in clothes, black always makes you appear slimmer and white makes you look bigger. Does the same apply to a sofa? Will a dark sofa appear to take up less space than a light sofa?

I currently have a green sectional, with thin tan striping to the extent that the entire thing looks quite neutral (sounds odd but true!).

I LOVE green and the walls are a medium olive, so it is perfect for us!
No furry friends to decorate around though...

Cream would not do well with us.

I'd go with the green. A vacuum cleaner is more reliable than a spot remover.

Green is a neutral.
Look outside and see what God does with it.

Exactly! Green is one of my favorite neutrals. Just look at a bouquet of flowers too. There are dark green accents along with lavender and white on the comfortor in a lavender room I'm currently decorating.

OP: Go Green!

I'd go with green. I think it wouldn't take long for the cream colored one to look really dingy/stained.

As usual, I'm going to be au contraire and say cream.

First off, the OP only plans to keep the sofa for a couple of years and not a lifetime. Secondly, if there is any kind of rug in the room with the sofa or enroute to the sofa, most paw dirt is going to be wiped off on that before it gets to the sofa anyway. Thirdly, it would drive me nuts making sure each and every visible hair is off the green. I can see every time the doorbell rings, running to the sofa first with some scotch tape trying to quickly grab all the stray hairs. Lastly, if I was that worried about dirt, I would throw a pretty (washable) blanket down on part of the sofa, for the dog's comfort and my piece of mind.

We currently have a tone-on-tone cream sectional, which we bought approximately 10 years ago. The only place we've had to touch up with a shampooer from time to time is the bottom section, closest to the floor, which tends to darken a bit over time. We've had to spot clean that same area on our other sofa, which is chocolate, so it's not just a cream thing. Our brown sofa is a bit more of a PITA to maintain than our cream one and the brown one is in the living room we seldom use, while the cream one is in our den - which is used all the time. If I were to buy new, I personally wouldn't buy a dark sofa again - because I'll probably always have dogs.

I would do cream. I have a small dog and teens and have had no problems. Mine is microfiber so don't know what fabric you are considering.

I also had cream when my girls were small (don't remember the fabric) and never had a problem.
