They’re not going to fit in 82 games before summer if they start then. They need to shorten the season.
There are many issues involved on what the season could look like. Will Covid re-serge? Will the Canadian border issue be resolved? Will there be a need for hub cities? Will fans be in attendance?
The goal is to have close to a normal season, but if the Canadian border issue can not be resolved there will be 7 teams that will have to find home ice in the states. Same goes for the lower leagues as well.
I'm starting to wonder if they'll be a 2021 season. Owners and players arguing about money, and the current circus going on in the NFL with the pandemic isn't encouraging.

I can tell you all parties (League, Owners and players) want to have a season. They realize the financial consequences of not having a season. But yes, things going on with the pandemic are creating obstacles.
At this point it is likely it will not start Jan 1. There will not be an 82 game regular season, and there is a good chance there will be regional bubbles for at least part of the season.

There is allegedly a few owners that do not want to play the '20-'21 season without fans because the bath they will take playing without fans is greater than not playing at all. NHL is a gate driven league. Looking at a rough economic ride.

That is true. With the way things are going with Covid I believe the season will start in Hubs. Not as airtight as what we saw this past summer. Come late spring hopefully teams will be back on home ice with some fans.
To add to my last post there is even talk about playing on out-door ice. Not much detail as of yet.
