Sorry im a novice to NHL. I heard flyers where better in the 70s and sometime after the pens got good. Who were the players that revamped and molded the pens in to such a good team? Did Crosby have a big impact?
Well first there were 2 such stretches in time when Pittsburgh had dominate teams...
First it came in the early 90s when they won back-to-back Stanley Cups which featured superstars Mario Lemiuex, Jaromir Jagr, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, and Paul Coffey. Mix those guys together with great assets such as Ulf Samuelsson, Brian Trottier, and Tom Barasso in net they were a powerhouse. They remained a force throughout the entire 1990s until the "dark days" of the early 2000s.
After missing the playoffs 4 straight seasons and getting lottery pick after lottery pick (and then the "gift" of getting the #1 pick in the Crosby draft) they were able to score some super-stars in the draft such as Crosby of course, Malkin, MA Fleury, and Jordan Stall (now with Carolina) and they rebuilt the franchise again. They reached the Finals in 07-08 only to lose to Detriot but the very next season they got their revenge against Detroit and won the Stanley Cup.
The last 4 seasons again they've been a dominate team in the East but haven't been able to get back to the finals... Injuries especially to Crosby have hampered them but as long as they have both Malkin/Crosby they'll always be contenders.
So to answer your question about Crosby... he absolutely 100% had an impact for their ressurection.

I think that was the years of expansion, when they were in the same division as the Jets and the others that came from the WHL. I'm not sure those were strong teams or lowly opponents.
