It's going to be an ugly season. Wings will be banking on the allure of Pizza Arena to keep fans distracted from the horror show on the ice and in the front office. Holland has tarnished his legacy. He cannot manage a roster in the cap era. He's about to run AA out of town after giving out sweetheart contracts to players not worth it. If he had any honor he would resign. Especially after refusing to change roles to allow Yzerman to transition to GM.
NHL is around the corner and it's a bittersweet affair. Love hockey but hate what the Wings have become.
The Red Wings will have issues beyond rebuilding the roster to sort through this season. First, with the passing of Michael Ilitch, ownership needs to be stablized within the Ilitch family. Second, general manager Ken Holland is in the last year of his contract. As the Red Wings are rebuilding, the timing is right for Holland to have an apprentice learn and be ready to take on general manager duties. An opportunity was missed with Steve Yzerman. The opportunity cannot be missed with someone else.
Wings dropped Pittsburgh on home ice 4-1. A great way to end 2017. Bertuzzi played well and earned 2 assists. Hopefully we'll see better results. Some reports are now indicating that Holland has informed the Ilitch family he intends to step aside at end of season. That would be fantastic. Time for a new direction and front office leadership in Detroit.
AA's goal to bring it level was amazing. Loved the winner he fed to Larkin too. Howard and Lundqvist both made nifty saves. Very entertaining recap to watch.
