What the makes the Winter Classic such a hit (pun intended)? It is because it is outdoors? I guess being outdoors makes it a real winter event. You really are out in winter.Should they do more outdoor games, maybe even make as many games as you can outside? What is stopping them?

The Winter Classic is more about television ratings. The teams involved already sell enough tickets. If they televised more outdoor games it would lose the appeal. Makes for a good annual event, something the NHL desperately needs (aside from playoffs/Cup finals).

The appeal is taking the game back to its roots. A lot of these players played on ponds or in their makeshift backyard rinks with the outdoor elements.

It was a big deal when it was here in Chicago, mainly because it was at Wrigley field and people go nuts for anything at Wrigley.

So would it really be a bad idea to have more games outside? Maybe they could actually design a "pond" and play on it.

Yeah, there is a romance to it and it gets the players excited - even if many of the modern players spent more time really working their game indoors with only periodic trips to the pond or outdoor rinks

A large part of the appeal is that it's a one off event ... big buildup, a lot more to it than just the winter classic (my university has it's club team playing on the sheet later in the week) and it makes for a great television showcase

It's a nice novelty for the fans and I wouldn't hesitate to go - although from most accounts it's not a great way to watch a game live

Not to mention there is a lot of expense in putting one of these on and you would run into diminishing returns

The alumni game was a blast to watch, that's for sure. The players looked like they were having a blast as well.

The Legion of Doom meets the Broad Street Bullies. What a treat.

Its a nice event to celebrate the NHL. I dont think it would be great to attend as its in a big stadium, but its a great watch on TV. The year they did it in Buffalo and it snowed looked really cool.

Rangers won and rightly so..the refs did everything but try armed robbery to take that game...a disgrace.
