Yep, that's why my dad would always get angry when he saw Cronkite on TV saying he's the biggest lying traitor on TV and never wanted the TV on that channel when he was on the air. He served 4 years in the Navy starting in 1964.

Yes it was with distinction and valor that they gave a woman bombs and a baby then told to go near American soldiers, as they gathered around to look at the baby, pull the pin and blow up yourself, the baby, and the soldiers who came to look at the baby. Now that's valor,...and liberals accused American soldiers of being baby killers.

I didn't see anything uncivil in his post.

Never hurts to bring the discussion back to reality.

That is the truth. Two close friends of my brother-in-law were killed by children. One running after a truck crying. When the truck stopped to help the child threw a grenade into it killing himself and all those on the truck. This was witnessed by soldiers in another truck following behind.

The second died along with many others when they stopped to help a group of children on the side of the road. Another grenade. More dead children and soldiers.

Politics aside, being around at that time, I never heard the baby killer name throwers addressing the flip side of that. Baby's killing our guys. Sorry. That's just a fact.

Depends on your definition of "reality".

Some people in the United States have a very tenuous grip on it.

That's true too. But let's face it: the North Vietnamese didn't fight with all that much honor and valor. You probably shouldn't have used those words.

What that all came down to was, the North Vietnamese were fighting with a purpose, and ARVN was not. Examples of the South Vietnamese fighting like an army with a mission (much less a plan) were few and far between.

At the risk of being accused of generalizing, what the South Vietnamese basically did was allow the United States to conduct the war. When we wouldn't continue to do so, that was pretty much the end of their independence.

Vietnam was (and still is) a disaster, and there was nothing positive in the 1975 Communist victory, and while China takes the brunt of the critics nowadays (or even noncommunist Russia!), the Commie government of Vietnam is so cunning that it always avoided putting Vietnam centerstage, so this totalitarian country is living in near oblivion while the successors of Jane Fonda, Bob Dylan et al concentrate their fire on China, Myanmar (former Burma), Israel, Russia, and even conservative democratic european countries like Poland .
Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are now poor, Communist countries, because the 50,000 US soldiers (+ South Vietnamese soldiers of the Republic of Vietnam) were betrayed by the Liberal elite back then in the Seventies, the consequence was untold suffering in Indochina (never forget the Genocide of the Cambodian people at the hand of the Red Kmer fanatics) . What a mess!

The British might have said the same thing about aspects of the Revolutionary War, or the Boers about the British, or the Native Americans about the Americans, etc, etc.

There's no way around it- war is a nasty business. Honor has little place in it. I have an independent source:

'Abstract words such as glory, honor, courage, or hallow were obscene beside the concrete names of villages, the numbers of roads, the names of rivers, the number of regiments and the dates' Hemingway 1929

Hemingway is not a good reference : he took part in the bloody Spanish Civil War (even wrote a book about it : "For Whom The Bell Tolls"), and was very partial in favor of the Communist side.
