There’s so much mythology and pop culture surrounding Alcatraz and its lonely island prison that to meet non-actors who actually served time there or guarded those inmates could be the most surreal experience of all.

I don't believe a word of this, or the movies. Convicted felons are always innocent, if you ask them. The only ones i feel sorry for were the few German spies captured on US soil and, later, the shabby band of American communists Hoover rounded up and put on the island to enhance his reputation. Save for these guys and the organized crime big-shots, like Capone and Kelly, whom Hoover put in Alcatraz (again to enhance his reputation as a tough guy, almost all of the rest were felons that other Federal prisons deemed too dangerous to handle in their own institutions.

Nor do I. I had access to the inmate files in the 1960s.

Its amazing how many 'guilty' people were in prison before scientific advances in DNA testing made finding the truth in some cases possible.
