Do you think it declined because of Gorbachev's harsh stance on alcohol? Did taking away vodka = the end of Soviet Russia?
Theory? More like a hypothesis and a very poor one at that, silly in fact.
The reason for the fall of the Soviet Union are well documented for an excellent article regarding the demise of the Soviet Union I defer to Foreign Policy:
"The Soviet model was defeated not only on the economic and social levels; it was defeated on a cultural level. Our society, our people, the most educated, the most intellectual, rejected that model on the cultural level because it does not respect the man, oppresses him spiritually and politically."

I know if the US government took away our brewski, people would be pissed.
Stolichnaya! Who stole my Stolichnaya!
What Ovcatto mentioned, plus The Global Financiers eventually decided to stop propping the Soviet system up as it had outlived its usefulness as boogeyman to fight - as new ones came to replace it (Environmental, Terror, Drugs, Transfats, Soda, ....). Combine cultural decay with lack of funds and things come crashing down and then others move in to 'capitalize' (Oligarchs).

Lol, if "our people rejected the model" because "it does not respect the man, oppresses him spiritually and politically, " and Gorbachev was the initiator of changes that were supposed to bring "respect of the man" and remove the "spiritual and political oppression," and people loved his ideas so much, why is he the most hated man/politician in Russia, while Stalin is not?

So the Beatles did have something to do with it?
