Over the last week I've been on my feet a lot working on various projects around the house. I had noticed some pain in the last couple of days in an area on the top of my foot (quite strong sometimes) near my ankle. Its especially sharp when I flexed or extended it after having it resting in one position for a while. I've noticed today that one of the veins on top of my foot is quite hard and there seems to be a dime sized lump and redness in that same area. The pain is also extending now up into my ankle. I'm a little concerned since there is a history of leg blood clots in my family. I've never heard of such a thing as a foot blood clot unless an injury was involved. I know leg blood clots can be very serious but I'm unsure (since its my foot and ankle and NOT my leg) if I should go to the emergency room or just call my Dr tomorrow and set an appt to see him.
A stress fracture of the foot/ankle is a possibility. That can cause a clot sometimes. In WWII, these were called "march fractures" as many new soldiers got them after marching a long time.
It maybe a broken vessel or something more. If your family has a history with clots would get it checked as soon as possible.Any vein can get a clot.
