does anyone know a home remedy for a severe sore throat???? Post nasal drip is the blame (I think). I don't have tonsils so it isn't that. Could be strep but I don't think so. Lots of post nasal drip though. I can't recall my throat hurting this bad since before my tonsils were removed.
I've tried Ocean nose drops,Chloraseptic, gargled with warm salt water and taken tylenol ,Robitussin CF for the nasal congestion and horrible cough I've had.

K, thanks!
Dream

Sore throats are often caused by nasal drip. To help with that I suggest you make a small investment in a neti-pot. It takes a little bit of time to get used to using but once you do it will be the best $20 you spent. I never even get sniffles anymore.

For the sore throat you gotta gargle with salt/warm water. Do that every few hours. Before bed take a high quality zinc supplement.

You should get it checked out though in case its strep. Do what you gotta do but then get yourself a neti-pot either way. Everyone should do nasal cleanse as part of a daily hygeine routine.

Totally agree about the neti-pot. I keep one in the shower and use something called alkolol in it. The Alkalol Company The best stuff ever. Has menthol and eucluptys (sp?) and other wonderful germ killing ingredients in it. You can get it most behind the counter in pharmacies. I use it daily, and gargle with it as well.

Thanks for the link I will check it out. You can also use zinc. Currently I use the salt and xylitol (the sweetener) which has anti-bacterial properties.

drink up some warm tea, w/lemon and honey in it. it'll fight infection, and sooth your throat.
and...go to the Dr. We used to treat sore throats at home w/home remedy and such, until a little more than a year ago. And what we thought had been a typical sore throat, ended up being a strep in my little one. Since it went undetected, the strep ran through her body and manifested in her kidneys. We didnt know til she went to the bathroom and it was so bloody, it looked like straight ketchup. PSG is very serious and real, and believe me, you dont want to chance it. You can have strep w/o the white patches (she did) and if certain strains, it can infest your body in some nasty ways. Not something to screw around with. Please, do go to the Dr. Then, do all the preventative stuff when you get cleared.

Gargle with salt water. It will take the pain out of your throat and kills germs.

Honey is great at getting rid of coughs. Take it plain or add it to your tea.

In late February of 1997, I had the worst sore throat I had ever had in my life! (Yes, it was so bad, I even remember what year it was! lol). I thought I was going to die! I forgot what the doctor called it, but it was a long word. It was kinda like strep throat. He prescribed me some kind of gargle, that was a pink liquid (looked like Pepto-Bismol) and my sore throat was gone the next day! I had instant relief! That stuff was a miracle. It was only by prescription and it was like $35.00 and that was in 1997. NO home remedy worked for me.

If I can think of it... I will report back.

thanks all! I'm still coughing a lot but the sore throat has eased. It was SO painful!!!!! I'm taking only Benadryl now for the post nasal drip. I don't think I should suppress the cough. Obviously the gunk needs to come up.

I had the worst sore throat of my life last month (really, really!) but it resulted from a horrible non-stop cough which turned out to be caused by the flu "strain A". So anyhow (I'm such the queen of useless information), I was prescribed a cough remedy that made me loopy and drowsy. But it took away the incredible pain overnight. Prior to getting the medicine, I was sobbing in the doctors office, you know, feeling like I would never have another day of happiness in my life. That passed quickly after I took a single dosage of this medicine. [I can find the name if necessary]. Lozenges and basic otc things hadn't helped at all, but I didn't try any of the things mentioned here.
