We are about to go visit my sister and her family (and stay with them). My nephew was diagnosed with whooping cough and has been treated for it with antibiotics. The whole family is now on antibiotics as a preventative and my niece is being tested for it also.
Am I putting my kids (& myself) at risk by going and staying with them? My sister is offended that I am considering post-poning our visit (we live on the West coast and they are in NY so it has been awhile since we have seen them). By the time we get there (the end of the week), they will have had all their antibiotics.
Well, I googled it and Dr. Bob Greene's website says that people are contagious with it until they have been on antibiotics for 5 days. So you might wait until all (their exposed) family members have been on at least that long. You might want to check with your own doctor, however.

Wanted to get some other opinions....
I might be a paranoid freak, but I wouldn't go there for at least 3 weeks. I'm sorry, but I just would not feel comfortable! It's your health and health of your children and the hell with everything else.
By the way, even if kids were vaccinated from it, Pertussin is the least effective vaccine out of DTaP combination and both of my friend's kids (who did receive the vaccines) caught it.

Yes my nephew that has it had the vaccine. Also, we are moving back to the East Coast so we are in between pediatricians, the last thing I want is my kids to get sick.

I am newly diagnosed and I don't even like my husband to see the violent coughing and struggle for breath. It is scary to be the one with it, but I would think traumatic for those who love you to see the spontaneous wretching and panic for breath recovery. It is a nightmare! I was diagnosed less than a week ago and have cough spasms every hour or so. I would postpone unless you want to enlist as a cook, nurse or maid.
jeaner22, you're giving advice to someone who needed it in 2008. Four years later, I'd assume he probably has already moved to the east coast, or decided not to go.
