I'm hoping someone else might have had experience with this. I had an eating disorder which started in HS. I started abusing laxatives. The last time I had a stimulant laxative was in 2007, so it's been 6 years. I don't touch those things anymore, mostly because they don't work for me anymore. I get constipated more times than not. I use a warm water enema most of the time if it won't come out on it's own.
I went to the docs. Had the endoscopy, colonoscopy, blood tests etc. Everything is fine. When I mentioned the laxative abuse, they don't say anything about it. I told the doc that I use an warm water enema when I can't get it out, she said that that's the problem. Told me to start taking Miralax and fiber supplement. I did. Miralax worked great for the first two weeks, now it's OK. I did the fiber, the fiber cereal, I started eating a big salad for dinner most nights of the week and still nothing. I don't want to be on this Miralax forever. I eat salads, beans, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, drink water, exercise and still nothing. This whole week I've been constipated. I started taking the Miralax again, so hopefully it will kick in soon.
So, does anyone have any suggestions? Would eating breakfast help any of this? I really don't like to eat in the morning and usually will just have a small lunch and dinner.
It sounds like you're eating right, but I would think breakfast would only help further regulate your GI system, so you may try oatmeal or a healthy cereal in the morning. Have you tried green tea? It works for a lot of people, including myself.
Eat broccoli...avoid things that make you reliant on them like suppositories. Find a new Dr. that will discuss your past behaviors with you. There is probably a correlation between the laxative abuse and current issues. Also, my mother had an illness that made it difficult to go and they had her quit eating any seeds and tree nuts.
It may be a result of medications you may be taking, lack of exercise, or for me it was STRESS- the old flee or fight syndrome and you can't flee while sitting on the toilet.
Psyllium fiber. Use the powdered kind, not the capsules. I use a full tablespoon in a glass of water every night. (I use WalMart's Equate brand).
Another suggestion is slippery elm bark, 2 or 3 capsules daily. It helps lubricate the digestive tract.
