Has anyone ever moved to Hawaii without a job set up for when they got there? If you have, what did you do about living arrangements?

yes, people come here all the time w/o jobs. more so when the job market was way better. now it is hard to find a job. you would need as much money as possible in case you didn't find something right away. you rent a furnished month to month if possible or rent a room.

It might work if they had a return plane ticket just in case they needed it. Plus a month or two's worth of living expenses. And they were willing to work at almost anything and live in a situation most likely much less than they had on the mainland. Just generalizations, of course.

I don't live in Hawaii yet but we are moving there soon--by doing research I would think that this, without a job, is a bad idea. Cost of living is astronomical.

Don't do it. In a year or two things will (hopefully) improve. Try reading the Star-Bulletin or the Advertiser online for a reality check. Good luck when you do make the move.

life is not about money. you can move anywhere you desire, if you are able to provide yourself the basics, i.e: food, water, shelter, clothing, transportation. worry about everything else later. mainland rules do not apply here, unless you are after more than you really need.

Unless I'm missing something you really kind of need money for the water, shelter, clothing, transportation stuff etc. Would be great if you didn't. I came over here in 1975 with 800 dollars in my pocket and not much else. Of course, back then I was young and stupid, I'm just not so young anymore. (Did that come out right?)
I'ld do as the others have suggested, have an escape plan just in case, return ticket, extra going back where you started emergency money. Hawaii isn't for everyone, what with the perfect weather, golden sandy beaches, warm ocean, swaying palm trees, lovely hula girls, great food, wait a sec, that's from the brochure. And, the cost of living is only astronomical if you work up at the observatory, otherwise I'ld say it's probably about 15% more expensive across the board than the mainland. (don't forget, 83% of figures are made up on the spot)

Aloha and okolemaluna
