I am wondering if it is worth the cost to ship a few year old Harley and a VW street legal dune buggy, or if they are readily available and net terribly expensive on Maui. The bike lets say is worth 12K where I live now if I were to sell it, the buggy probably around 5K, I have not yet figured out the shipping cost, but I am wondering if I should bother with a quote, if they are available regularly then I will just sell them and buy when I get there instead of shipping for a few grand.

You need to get quotes from shippers like Matson.

I would also be interested in the availability of used cars on the big island. A few people have told me that 'island beaters' are pretty much available regularly on Kauai. I assume this is true on BI also, but guess I shouldn't take it for granted.

craigslist is a good start. Also check the local newspapers on-line classifieds.

I would sell the dune buggy and ship the bike. Take the bike to a HD dealership and have them call the HD dealership on Maui. They will crate it and ship it to the other dealership which will then un-crate it, reconnect etc and have it ready for you. It will go air frieght in about 1 week. We shipped one from Las Vegas, in 2003 it cost about $1400.
Lots of used vehicles available at very good prices on BI and I'm guessing everywhere else too in this economy. when you arrive, buy one. You get tired of always only having a bike because of the rain. (we did)

I've researched shipping motorycyles also, and the thing that gets me is that if you do try to sell it on the mainland, you would end up losing about what it costs to ship it, so if you REALLY LOVE that bike, ship it!!! I would definitely sell the dune buggy-no need in Hawaii, plus plenty of dunes from Oregon to CA and Idaho that would pay good $$ for it!!
I have a new KTM that I want to ship, 1-there's not too many KTM's for sale, and 2-it's all street legal, and don't forget about 3-They're badass and theres plenty of dirtbiking on the islands. SO it's a win-win. I would lose SOOO MUCH if I had to sell it here, now...

1. There is KTM and Harley dealership on Maui.
2. If you ship with http://www.pashahawaii.com that will cost you around $600 each. Not that bad if bikes worth it.
What kind KTM is it? 990 Adv? If it's just dirt bike probably will be easier to sell it on mainland and buy another dirt bike on island.

HUH, I did not see that dealer when I looked, but I found it, thanks!

My KTM is a 300 EXC-G, it goes "everywhere" and has been modified, plus has two sets of tires, off road and street, so I'd really like to keep her. For $600, that's awesome, I may consider shipping my 05 WR250F Yamaha.
Try to sell them here, i'd get about $4k max for the KTM and $3K max for the Yamaha. a BIG LOSS...

Thanks for the website on the shipping.

I heard somewhere that if you want a certain bike from the dealer and they don't have it, they'll get if for you and stick you with the shipping costs.. OK i guess, but there's probably little inventory, so it's probably common that people buy something they didn't really want to avoid the fee, and just "pick something from the showroom floor" type of thing..

Ship the Harley because if you're thinking about selling yours and buying a new one here you'll be in for a shock. Maui's only Harley dealer charges roughly 3 grand over MSRP.
