They're the size of Mini Coopers, can move at around 200 mph, have been known to carry off humans in the middle of the night, can live off spam Lite for years, have no natural enemies, can make themselves invisible at will, speak local da kine pigeon, and I do mean pigeon, not pidgen, have been known to pay well over $10 a gallon for milk, (It's widely rumored they have it Fed Ex'd in from NYC), are covered with coarse black hair, which can really mess up your vacum cleaner when they're shedding, which is apparently all the time, are fastidious groomers, think absolutely nothing of borrowing your shampoo, especially if it's that stuff that makes grey hairs disappear, are extremely difficult to toilet train, watch CNN all day long, will do just about anything for a foot long chili cheese dog from the 7 Eleven store, and have a tenedency to snore loudly, which can be rather irritating at times. Other than that, Kane spiders are just fine!!!
Had a house upcountry Maui a long time ago, makai side was nothing but cane fields and cattle. Rickety old house was maxed out with cane spiders, I didn't bother them, they didn't bother me. They're actually quite small, little body with a WHOLE lot of leg... What you really have to watch out for over here is the cannibals, or was that cannibus????? Well, either way, they're all over the place!!!!

Aloha and okolemaluna

Pig roast animal cruelty? That's vermin eradication. Tasty, too!

Cane spiders only get to be the size of softballs. I had one that lived behind the dryer in the wash house for several years. I finally figured out where all those socks went when one of a pair would disappear....

Thanks for pointing that out Wela popoki!!!! They are also notorious kleptomaniacs, and, if you find yourself short,,,, say 3 1/2 pairs of socks, it's a dead giveaway that a cane spider, in search of the latest fashion, is on the loose nearby,,,,, so, beware, or just stick to rubbah slippahs........

Aloha and okolemaluna

Hmm, actually, if we go back to the original poster, she/he mentioned "kane" spiders which would be way different than cane spiders. We get "kane" (kah-ney) and "wahine" for each kind of spider, we've just assumed the discussion was about cane spiders, huh? So, do kane kine cane spiders get bigger than the wahine kine cane spiders do you think?

Cane spiders are hunter spiders, they don't build webs and they lurk and hide mostly, you don't generally walk into one. There is a small one living on an onion in the bread box at the moment, but he will probably find a new home when I use the onion. They don't usually bite people, I haven't heard of anyone being bitten, although perhaps Jung knows? He might even have a spider as a drinking buddy, no telling with all that okolehau around!

Exactly. We're in the process of moving to Maui, and I'd absolutely freak out if I ever see one.

I heard kane spiders are found furthest away from the beach. Centipedes are the real problem. They can be found everywhere. Also, a kane spiders body may be the size of a "ping pong ball" but their legs make them appear larger. Run!!!
