My DH is in love with his plasma tv. He wants to bring this 52 plasma and a big screen to the island. Has anyone shipped a TV and how did you do it? We obviously do not have the box it came in and I am not sure how the container works for stability.

We had the original box but still used FedEx or UPS. They will supply a special box, packing, insurance and none of it will be cheap. Get a quote from them. It might be cheaper to buy a replacement at Costco if you can sell the one you have.

I just shipped my 40" LCD a few days ago through Fedex. I did not have the original box the tv came with, but was able to get a similar box from a friend. I would suggest you go to electronic stores and ask if you can have their spare boxes or maybe even pay for them. The box I got had styrofoam in it so it was very stable. Otherwise I would suggest many many layers of bubble wrap.

check out royal hawaiin movers tell them jimmie from tampa sent you... they are good... they don't go by weight they go by cubes. its about $1.25 a cube ft ..i sent 40 large boxes for about $1000.... if you don't have funiture this is the way to go... but get even boxes. the first time i did it i used large boxes that were 4.5 cube they will round them up to 5 cube ft... so if you use 3 you get the most bang for your buck then if you have a few wierd boxes thats not bad... but they come to your house count your boxes... i put an name and address on every box... load it up on a truck... take it to warehouse pallet it wrap it tight in plastic wrap... and in about 2 to 3 weeks (if you are in west coast) they will bring them to you... when i came back from maui.. i shipped it threw a wholesale ups place i got sticker shock i sent about 30 boxes and it was about 1800...
it is so easy to find funiture on craigslist people come and go everyday and the big resorts remodel and liquidate all their stuff... sell the furniture you got send your keepsakes and household items.. and you will be good... look at each item and its replacement cost compared to cubes or weight which ever way you use.. and see if it would be cheaper just to buy a new one over there...
hope this helps
kimo

when i moved to the island of oahu i shipped my 42in lcd from chicago thru USPS and it took 5 weeks to get to the island come to find out they ship big items on a ship. when i left the island i went with Fedex it took 3 days got insurance costed less then USPS, if you need something to ship the tv i would suggest going to best buy, walmart circuit city or something like that and ask for a box, people buy big screens and take the unit out the box at the store. good luck and enjoy hawaii

Just FYI everyone, shipping rates for UPS/FedEx via air have gone up by over 40% since the beginning of 2008, due to fuel prices. Ground has increase over 20%. This is not just for Hawaii; we ship as a part of my business all over within the mainland and my clients are stunned at the new prices.

So any estimates people give here are bound to be out of date, you need to check with the shipping companies. Estimates also now have a shorter expiration period.
