Are there any retired military on here? I was wondering what kind of Military facilities are available. I am retired Air Force and know there are no bases around there. I would appreciate any input.
thanks Lewie

There is a Pennsylvania Air National Guard unit based in Middletown Pa, just a few minutes outside of Harrisburg. Home of the 193 Operation Wing. There is also fort Indiantown Gap a few miles northeast of harrisburg. It is an Army reserve and National Guard base. www.paharr.ang.af.mil (broken link), there is also the Defense Distribution Point in New cumberland and the Navy Supply Yard in Mechanicsburg. There is also an Army National guard area on Calder street in Harrisburg city.

Smile Thanks for the info

I remember Indiantown gap as a boy we used to travel past it going from Harrisburg to Schukill Haven every weekend. A friend of mine's dad took us fishing there. I also remember New Cumberland where i reported after I enlisted. Are there any retired military on here who use the facilities such as pharmacy commissary ect? If there are not that might indicate this isn't a good place to retire or I am in the wrong forum. Any help would be appreciated.
Lewie

my friends dad works at the Gap, he's in iraw right now, but i can tell you there are tons of military people around here, current and ex. i cant go into specifics about whatever cost of living, military stuff. i know two girls who are there and get off base housing allowance. Middletown is pretty nice, there are a lot of people there every week. i worked at a gas station next to the enterance. i cant answer military based questions, they have a VA hospital in camp hill about 20 mins away, but could answer anything else about the area or region.

Like you I retired from the AF. I moved to the Carlisle area to be on the east coast near family. It's about 20 Miles from Harrisburg. I utilize the facilities at Carlisle Barracks, home of the United States Army War College. It has a decent commissary, PX and a nice clinic which provides me a Primary Care Provider and can refer me to civilian specialists if need be through Tricare Prime. By the way, this is the only military facility in PA which has all these services. If you're a golfer, it also has a good 18 hole course that is circled by a 2 mile running/walking track. Good luck Lewie.

Thanks thats exactly what I needed to know. All my family is either in Harrisburg or Pine Grove. I went past carlisle once on my way to shippensburg state college. I enlisted when I was 19 and I didn't travel much then. That sounds pretty good. So I know it's a possibility.
Thanks.

The Harrisburg metro has a ton of retired military personnel. You'll fit in quite well.
