My 22 year old son will be graduating in 2 weeks and will be starting a job in January in Portsmouth. I have never been in Virginia. Where would be a safe nice place for someone who loves sports to live? We were thinking of driving there (it's a 12 hour drive from where we live) right after Christmas for a few days. Where should we stay? What rentals are nice? What are the typical monthly rents? He would like to get a dog so it would have to be pet friendly. Thank you!

Hi there ! I live in VA beach and don't know a lot about Portsmouth. Trying to send your post back to the top so that someone with some knowledge can answer it for you. Good luck to you!

Where in Portsmouth will your son be working? Normally young people want to be near everything they need. Hampton Roads is several cities connected together by basic roads or tunnels. You can live in any of those cities and only be 20-30 minutes from home. There are several nice hotels in the area for you to stay in. If you are driving, I would recommend the hotels down at Waterside. It will be very easy for you to get to Portsmouth. There is a Sheritan and Marriot at Waterside, but I'm not sure what your budget is. There is also the Holiday Inn Express and Residence Inn off of North Military Hwy, near the airport that wouldn't be hard for you to get to Portsmouth from there.
