Question for those of you who shoot .50 BMG rifles:
Have any of you shot American Eagle .50 BMG ammo?
Reason I'm asking is that a locally-owned gun shop has what seems to me a really, really low price on it. How much does a ten-round box usually go for? I'm planning on getting a .50 BMG. I know ammo is ridiculously expensive. If this is as good a buy as I think it is, I'm going to buy all they have. I'll either use it when I get the rifle or sell it for a profit if I decide not to get the rifle--yes, it seems that cheap! Maybe I'm missing something.
I don't own or shoot a .50 BMG. However, I have long trusted the American Eagle brand, because it is one of Federal's brands. I regularly shoot Federal Gold Medal Match in my long-range rifles, and other Federal ammunition in pistols, rifles and shotguns. I have never been disappointed.

Yes, I've always been pleased with American Eagle (in my .308, .30 carbine, and .22). I bought a box of the .50 BMG just to check it out. It looks as good as any other American Eagle cartridges. Come weekend, I'm going to clean the store out.
In case you didn't know, Dillon makes the BFL - Big Fifty Loader - specifically for the .50 BMG.
Depending on if you swage or cast your own bullets, you should be able to load it for less than the American Eagle ammo you are eyeing.
That said, I agree American Eagle is good ammo, and usually at a very attractive price.
Midway USA is currently selling Federal American Eagle for about $4.70/rnd for a box of 10 ($47/box of 10), or $4.10/rnd for a box of 100 ($410/box of 100). So if you are finding it locally for considerably cheaper than that, it's probably an extremely good deal. Midway seems to have "average" prices - kind of what I'd call generic retail price. I usually comparison shop against their site since it makes for a decent baseline reference as to what "inexpensive" is.
In contrast, surplusammo.com is selling the same Federal American Eagle Ammunition, 660 grain FMJ XM33C for $3.10/rnd for a box of 10 ($31 for the box). SurplusAmmo.com - 50 BMG 660 Grain FMJ Federal XM33C - 10 Rounds (http://www.surplusammo.com/products/50-BMG-660-Grain-FMJ-Federal-XM33C-%252d-10-Rounds.html - broken link) Use this website if you want to get a reasonable baseline for what "really inexpensive" is. If you find ammo cheaper than what they have, it's pretty darn inexpensive.
Federal American generally runs 4.00-6.00 a round. So 3.00 a round is nice. I would also look online and for 100rd discounts. I have found deals on 100rds that broke down to 3.10 a round after shipping.
