According to the following link Greenville is one of the few places that have been helped, not hurt, by an economic dependence on the auto industry...
Is the article correct?

So far, yes. The BMW plant is about finished basically doubling its size, and local suppliers are most likely going to benefit from Mercedes expanding their operations in Alabama as well. Not only that, but Clemson Unversity's CU-ICAR is gaining traction and attracting attention in the industry. Then, there's the distinct possibility that Proterra will locate its HQ and manufacturing here adjacent to CU-ICAR.

However, I would hesitate to say this metro is "dependent" on that one industry.

Last year BMW let go roughly 800 people, from what I was told it was most of the temporary workers. Next year the Sara Lee company is supposed to close their manufacturing operations in Greenville, putting hundreds out of work. So there has definitely been some hurt in Greenville. There are those who are struggling right now to find decent paying work.

As far as the article, I agree that Greenville offers more bang for the buck then many other US cities......but I suggest reading between the lines for the reason why. More bang for your buck cities ( lower cost of living cities) are that way for a reason and usually the reason is because employment opportunities are not abundant. Having a luxury auto manufacturer as one of the biggest employers in the area is not necessarily a good thing....when the economy goes bad luxury items like cars are the first things that people cut back on and stop buying!

This is a good article. As for being helped by the auto industry, BMW recently hired back most all temp workers who had been let go and is also in the process of hiring for the additional factory line it just built (another 500 people or so). Since BMW exports the vehicles worldwide, it is less reliant on the U.S. economy for sales. A true plus.

Add to that, ATW (American Titanium Works), which works with the automotive industry.....is moving their headquarters here (along with manufacturing) and that will add another 500 plus jobs.

Proterra (hybrid bus maker) is looking at Greenville for 1,300 plus jobs.

CU-ICAR (automotive research) continues to add companies and jobs.

The auto industry has definitely helped Greenville, instead of hurting Greenville, as has been the case in some places like Detroit.

Business is booming at the large GE plant as well, and let's not forget the mainstay Michelin North America has been over the past two decades, adding strength to the growing automotive foundation in the Upstate.

It is safe to say that without BMW, Michelin, and the host of related suppliers spread across the Upstate, Greenville would look much different.

I wondered how much time would pass before someone posted this "achievement." It was in the local news last week, and I knew someone wouldn't let the forum down.
