Good thing all that giving has lowered the poverty level in Greenville to just over 15%
Not the responsibility of those that give for the poverty level....it is the responsibility of each individual to make their own way in life. We live in a free country....anyone in poverty can climb out of poverty if they TRUELY have the drive.
Charity should be there to help those that want a better life, not those that want to live off others.
Teach a man to fish and he eats for life, give him a fish and he eats for a day. Much truth in that old saying.
Greenvillians, IMO, believe in personal resposnsibility, and anyone showing personal responsibility will immediately receive help and a hand up.
Just a reminder that tithing (giving 10% of what you earn) to your church is considered "charitable giving."
Given the HUGE percentage of churchgoers around here in comparison to other parts of the country, it's no wonder that Greenville consistently tops the lists of "giving to charity."

^ And what a great thing!!!!!!! If that is the case, then we need more churchgoers!!!!! I grew up "tiithing" in church and that money went to help feed people around the world.....help build homes for the poor.....help the elderly pay their bills.....etc. That is a great thing, right?
Sadly, the government doles out money to those that simply have more babies for tax breaks, while spending 600 dollars on a Gucci purse and letting their kids wallow in filth.
The "heart" of charitable giving understands TRUE "need" as it is one on one.......government simply functions in redistribution and statistics, whether the true need is valid or not, as government is basically a large business (a poorly run business), but nonetheless a business.

You could say the same thing about business. Many businesses get tax breaks that are there simply to contribute to the CEO's income statement. Proterra in Greenville is a great example, this company is getting orders from places like Seneca which amounts to DeMint getting federal dollars for a company in his hometown. Sales folks get tax credits for using their home as a base of operations.
The "tax the rich" vs charity argument boils down to this:
It is *NOT* my responsibility as a taxpayer to subsidize others.
It *IS* my responsibility as a human being to help others who are less fortunate in whatever way - by helping a struggling friend through a rough patch, giving of my time or money to organizations that assist the less fortunate, or by donating un-needed items so that others can benefit from them.
Nowhere in the Bible does it say for governments to steal from one group of people to give to another group. People who point to the Bible to justify government wealth redistribution miss or ignore this vital distinction ENTIRELY, and in my opinion are bastardizing what Christianity actually stands for.
Can you imagine just for a moment if we all just worked together as one group of people instead of divided how much more we could do. Greenville could be number 1 right now.
