I just bought a knew home in easley sc. My question is about the vehicle property tax. I own 3 cars between me and my husband. I am living in N.Y right now and I am wondering what a vehicle property tax is. I own a 2007 pontiac, A FORD 2004 PICKUP and a stealth 1996. the milage on them is over 40,000 on the first two cars and more on the stealth which is a late model car. does anyone have any idea what I would be paying for the vehicle property tax. I never heard of this and would appreciate someone giving me an idea of what I would have to pay. We are going down at the end of this week to visit our new home and need to no about how much money we would need to register our vehicles. thankyou
If you call the county they can tell you. I am in easley but in Anderson county. For our 200 mits. galant with high miles and 2005 trailblazer under 50k miles we paid 260.00. It all depends on the car and milage.

I am from NY too and had never heard of vehicle property tax either until I moved to SC. I have been paying over $300 since I moved here, it has not gone any lower. Every year it has been the same thing and when I ask why I was told that they calculate the cost according to the year, make and mileage of the car. In other words the newer the car the more money they charge.
Charging people hundreds of dollars for a sticker with the year printed on it to put on their license plate!
I paid around $75 last year in vehicle property tax for a 2003 car with 60,000 miles. Overall the taxes here are very low and I believe these funds go toward fixing roads (not for the cost of making the little sticker). I do think that vehicle weight and gas mileage should also be taken into account, though, and less emphasis on age. That has the unintended consequence of discouraging new car sales.
Keep in mind that the gas tax in SC is low, so you might be saving 20 cents a gallon, which makes up for that extra cost pretty fast.
We'd have to drive about 3000 miles a month to make up the difference, unfortunately we don't do nearly that.
In our case the taxes aren't going to stop us from moving. We will be gaining state income tax that we don't have here, but dropping $800+ a year in flood insurance. I'm sure we will not pay nearly as much for homeowners insurance there ($3500 a year for a $175,000 home). It appears that property taxes are about the same.
I still have to do a thorough investigation of the differences in corporate tax rates, unemployment taxes, and licenses compared to FL as well.
All part of the larger financial picture that has to be planned for.
The taxes do go for road work, but the majority of the tax goes to schools. Keep in mind that if you buy a vehicle in SC you will only pay $300 in sales tax.
Wow, Something I'll have to keep in mind. We pay about 40 a year in FL for a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix.
We came from florida last year. It is NOT a big deal! Compared to what we were paying in homeowners insurance, and taxes we still make out better.
