I probably should know the answer to this and but exactly is DMV Renewal Fee?

I received my vehicle tax notice which was higher than the previous year so I looked online to see what went up. Evidently every other year we pay a 24.00 DMV Renewal Fee.

Why are we charged this every other year?

Also I think it's crazy they charge $1.88 to pay online.

Thanks.

because that's how we pay for our vehicle's license plates.

When we left Illinois it was $48 per year so I consider myself lucky to get 4 yrs for that price. Incidentally, Illinois raised the rate after we left; I don't know how much it is up there these days.

Then drive there and pay it after standing in line for an hour.

Nope. I just paid it with my checking billpay so didn't even have to pay for a stamp.

Amen ... paying online is the best thing to happen ... in the past you stood in line to pay the county taxes and then you had to grit your teeth and stand in line at the DMV which is always a 'total joy!'

Why would anyone drive and pay when you can write a check and mail it or pay through their bill pay? Don't most places let you pay online for free? What's with the charge is my point.

Most government entities make the consumer pay the fees. I go in person usually on the last day when paying online doesn't make a lot of sense when you need that document to drive your car.
