We will be in Greenville next week, and would like to know of any recommended restaurants. We already know where the fast food joints and Golden Corral are; we're looking for good barbecue, and maybe a decent steakhouse. Any suggestions?

I like Thai food, and recommend "Lemon Grass" on main street Greenville.

For BBQ, my favorite was Turpin's in Travelers Rest on Hwy25 (featured in Southern Living). However, they closed about two years ago. They now have a very small pickup only place on 290 a few miles off 25. Haven't stopped there yet. Turpin's was known for being very "smokey", so if you don't like smoke.....

The small local places that are popular for BBQ are Bucky's on Roper Mtn. 329-0054. And, Charlies on Pelham Road 297-7876. Both of these are on the east side and are casual sandwich joints.

For a steak house, I've been to a few and feel you can't beat "The Peddler" 235-7192. It is on 276 south of Furman by about 3-4 miles. You'll pass it up and never know its there, so call for directions and a landmark. The atmosphere is top notch for the mountain cabin feel. The food was great. The price was on the high side.

For a great steak (and increcible sea bass as well), try Rick Erwins in downtown Greenville, in the West End. It is a pretty upscale place and they have wonderful food and service.

Love Thai food- is it really hot? We like it HOT! ANd BBQ should be smoky- I'll look for those places, as well as The Peddlar or Rick Erwins. What is considered expensive? I don't mind spending $30 for a meal (per person) once in a while.

By the time all is said and done, Peddler could run $100 for a couple. Entrees at about $30. It has so much character though. It is one of those places that you will talk about in 10-15 years based on atmosphere.

We don't ever pay that much.... but my folks treated us one night. And it was a treat.

hahahaha.....got a good story about the "Hotness" of the food at Lemon Grass. They ask you to rate the hotness you want on a scale of 1-10. Now mind you, I grew up on hot cajun food. I asked for a 2, and was mopping the sweat from my brow. How anyone could eat upwards of 5, I have no idea. I recommend "The Clay pot". It is a noodle and mixed seafood dish served in a clay pot. Entrees there are about $15.

If you want the best steak...top of the line...its an expensive place but Chophouse 1941 is by far the best in the area.
Exit 54 off I-85

Do you mean Chophouse 47? Sounds a little spendy. We once went to Berne's in Tampa FL. We spent just short of $200 for 3 of us. It was actually worth it, though. They have the biggest private wine cellar in the world, a separate dessert room, and they never, EVER rush you- we could have stayed all evening. It's common to see celebrities or sports figures dining there. On our budget, it had better be a really important event for that kind of money!

Yeah, it's Chophouse 47. And their food is excellent!

Oh, by the way...the best steak you will ever eat is at Ruth's Chris. I know there isn't one in Greenville yet, but there should be one within the next year or so. I've eaten at a few of them in larger cities and they have the best steak by far!

For BBQ, we love Sticky Fingers, right downtown Gville. Awesome ribs and pulled pork sandwiches....yum.
