if you work in Greenville, live in Greenville - I do not recommend taking I-85 for any commutes
the interstate system in the Upstate is horrific - massive construction is finally taking place but is all reactionary - when completed in the next several years, it will be barely adequate
I commute daily on 85 - over the past year, I've had to leave for work earlier/earlier - the level of commuter/truck traffic seems to have skyrocketed in the past 18 months - the Upstate needs a truck bypass but that will never happen in my lifetime - SCDOT is totally incompetent/corrupt

This is absolutely correct. What I've noticed the last couple weeks is that we aren't seeing the normal summer downturn in traffic because school is out. Been doing the Spartanburg to Greenville commute for four years now and invariably summer commuting has been better, but not this year. I think the growth and increased truck traffic, combined with construction going on both on the Spartanburg side and the Greenville side has pushed this over the edge.
Thanks all. I'm trying to stay in Greenville area because I work near Pelham Rd and I-85.
....
I've looked at Greer, but airport is so close by that airport noise is a concern.
...
Thanks.
We've lived in Greer for past 16 years and are about 2 miles on a line perpendicular to the runway. You really don't notice noise from airport unless you live under flight path. Stay away from that and you would love it here. And there are several ways to get to downtown G'vill without going on 85 at all.
Anderson and Spartanburg have made strides with their downtowns. New restaurants, parks, outdoor activities, etc bringing life back that was lost to the retail boulevards. Clemson has a cool downtown too but it's obviously more college oriented.

I'm new to Greenville, coming from Columbia area. I'm renting near Woodruff Rd currently, and the noise is horrible. Traffic - both air and road are too much. Planes overhead are bad enough, but I don't want to see their landing gear, ya know? ;-)

I also heard Mauldin was making a downtown area.
Travelers Rest is too far for a commute, but it is cute.
I'd really love to be in the mountain area, but that is a bit too far as well.
What areas of Spartanburg are good?
Thanks.
Simpsonville may work for you. It's south of Greenville on 385 and has plenty going on.

We just moved to the Westside of Spartanburg right, but it could actually be Wellford. We can be to Pelham Rd in 15 mins. Obviously, I’m not sure what the time would take during rush hour. We love this area. We are close to everything and can get into Greenville in under 30 mins. Again not sure about rush hour. Neither one of us works in Greenville. Hubby is retired and I work from here me.
Spartanburg has a nice downtown. You should definitely check out Spartanburg. It wasn’t on our radar when we were looking to move as we had our heart set on Greenville, but once we came out this way, we were sold.
