When regulated, I see prostitution on equal grounds as gambling. Unregulated, it is the downfall of society, and akin to crystal meth.
The number of men in our society who have ever employed a prostitute is probably less than five percent, and the number who do so regularly maybe one or two percent. The number of men whose lives have been adversely affected by the employment of prostitutes is vanishingly insignificant---you can round it off to zero..
Downfall of society? In what way do you think our society would be any different from what it is, if there had never been a single prostutute in America?
Are there any women who engage in prostitution because they really want to?
Same type of women who are strippers or "escorts". The ones who do it for easy money. They're not all drug addicts doing it to support a habit or teen runaways who were abused as a child. Besides, we already have a form of legal prostitution in the U.S. outside of Vegas. It's called porn.
Like the poster from Vegas said; if it's regulated (making sure that licenses are suspended and the businesses fined if the girls have diseases) I don't see anything wrong with it.
According to this study...75 to 90 percent of all women in prostitution were sexually abused as children. (Debra Boyer, University of Washington, "Danger for prostitutes increasing, most starting younger" Beacon Journal, 21 September 1997)
And...300,000 to 600,000 juveniles are involved in prostitution in the United States. (Gary Costello of the Exploited Child Unit of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, "Danger for prostitutes increasing, most starting younger," Beacon Journal, 21 September 1997)
