Yes, I agree. I've posted a few times to that effect in this thread. Socialism breeds an insidious form of selfishness and "I've got mine"-ness that people seem to like to ignore. And stripped of any incentive to work harder or longer or smarter, or at all, I would likely be happy to make others pay for me.

At the same time, the article in The Atlantic has some good points (though I'm not as hopeful as it turns out to be toward the end). Computers, robots, software, AI, androids, neural nets, etc. are becoming and are going to become so capable that they will usurp humans in a lot of ways. Our technology arguably already has "a mind of its own" in the sense that progress and Moore's Law and so forth are drawing us inexorably toward that time when technology can do virtually everything.

The show "Humans" (on AMC) has touched on this -- the high schoolers of the time are very disaffected because the androids have become so wickedly capable that it's pointless to want to become, for instance, a physician. The androids are hundreds of times more analytical, precise, and capable, learn instantly (rather than over the course of years), never forget, and never get fatigued. They even build and program themselves. There's not much available for young people to specialize in. So the high school daughter on the show laments "what, are we all just going to be poets?"

It's unbelievable that people are actually sold on government stealing from the doers to give to the people who refuse to change with society. You'll be left in the dust, I've seen this firsthand due to businesses leaving. The people who held on to the old way are still poor. Those who moved on and moved with the times are doing much better.
If thousands of jobs are gone putting on your big boy and girl pants is not gonna matter because no matter what education or skills they get there are not going to be enough jobs for everyone.

Obama's bragging he is doing a great job, that the economy is great, he says the job market is great, unemployment rate is down. Obama says so therefor it must be. What is the unemployment rate now? Around 5%? That's low. Saying there are no jobs is a lie, just another excuse. Put your big boy pants on and get a job.

We tried warning you but you refused to hear. So enjoy the consequences of your decision. Believe me, those rich liberals got their way and could care less about you.

Where did you get uemployment is at 5%? Just because there are jobs does not mean they are good jobs many are part time jobs or seasonal. There is no sense trying to reason with you if you want to just make stuff up and pretend that it is reality.

I edited it out because I was trying to be nice and not insulting but it is hard with people like you you post the same thing over and over and will not try to understand any else's point. I already have a job thank you two in fact but as usual you have to resort to personal insults because you have no real point or facts.

Thats because N. Europe offers the highest ethics in the world. A government is only as good as its people.

This country was largely dominated by Central and N Europeans and enjoyed good ethics that statistics bore out.

Then the government put itself in charge of running everything. An institution that has f*k*d up almost everything it has touched.

Call me what you will. I will not waver from favoring statistical analysis and methodology over sentiment and lies (akaolitical correctness).

No...we can't approach utopia without first becoming an absolute fiery hell that would involve purging much of the human race. A purge that might include me since I view pornography.

90% of our problems are caused by 10% of the people. As long as that 10% is allowed free interaction, "utopian dreams" can't even be visualized by creative writers and movie makers. If they did produce something, it would bomb. Society craves its murder and mayhem.

We could almost eliminate property crime yet largely choose to ignore much real crime. Why focus on real crime when you have pinchers, pornography, leerers, suggesters, daters, fornicators, urinators, masturbaters, yellers, spankers, parents without electricity, gun owners, bible readers and believers, and other such people of questionable vision. Their Thoughts must be Policed.

More government. Thats the solution.

Someone suggested the new AMC show Humans as having some good context. I watched an episode and am part way into a second. It is interesting but it appears to be headed off into the "if robots have feelings" weeds. I think they may try that with AI in psychology labs but for the real work it is a hindrance. If we get automated cars, one of the big benefits is that roads will handle a lot more traffic because they will be able to safely follow at closer distances and there will be far fewer tie ups from accidents. The last thing we would want to do is gum up the works with "I'm not letting that jerk in front of me" emotions or give the machine a desire to look at the sunset instead of the road ahead. Emotions rarely enhance the decision making process when performing useful work.
Also, while I understand why it makes a lot of sense to make humanoid robots - navigating the same stairs, escalators and sidewalks, sitting in the same seats in planes/buses/cars, etc, I don't really see the point in trying to make them appear to be human except in a few rare applications.

But another appeal to those pushing capitalism and only capitalism...

If there is 50% unemployment by design (jobs filled by robots/automation, not eliminated by economic downturn) how would unbridled capitalism provide for everyone?

LOL, no freaking kidding, that's what R's have been saying all along... crappy jobs. But Obama has been bragging, you Obama supporters defend him no matter how bad, Obama brags that he brought the unemployment rate down, he's bragging he did a great job. Obviously Obama isn't talking about quality of jobs. shhhh

You think Obama's best for this country? You get what you voted for... part time and seasonal, not so good jobs,
