There are some rural highways in SC that are very desolate and just forest for miles & miles like US-21 south of Orangeburg to I-95 and much of US-21 from Blythewood to Rock Hill for examples.

Basically, you could drive these routes between the tiny rural settlement of Owyhee, Nevada and the tiny rural settlement of McDermitt, Oregon - about 115 miles or so - and see no other vehicles at all.
Cool. How do I get there?

State Hwy 1 through the Delta in MS is pretty desolate. The few towns along there are semi-ghost, and not much in between them.

Well, you can get to McDermitt on Highway 95. There is a Texaco station on the Nevada side of the OR/NV border. It's about 180 miles from Boise, which is the nearest larger city. Or 75 miles north of Winnemucca, off of I-80.

Then, you'd fuel up, and head east. Refer to topographical maps to pick your route, carry extra fuel and survival supplies for several days, and remember that some roads are subject to blockage by snow until the summer.

It's a vast and desolate landscape that makes for a good escape from the city.
