I've been to all the places on the OP's poll list... if I had to revisit just one of them, I'd pick the Smokies. Forbes list is indeed very strange. Much as I love Chicago, Navy Pier wouldn't even be in my top 100 list... we felt we wasted our time going there.
My top recommendations would be (in no particular order):
Grand Canyon
All of Utah's National Parks
Statue of Liberty (and all the other famous stuff in NYC)
Arlington Cemetery
FQ New Orleans
Death Valley
Mt. Rainier
Appalachians
Thousand Islands (upstate NY)
Yellowstone
Been to Disney World once, the Mall in DC, Navy Pier, and The Smokies (several times). While The Smokies top anything I see on the list IMO, I'd love to see Times Square. Not too interested in Vegas.
I voted Vegas (surprise!)... I've been many times and will continue to go for a fun time. It is a great weekend place, esp if you are meeting up with people from allover the U.S. ... easy place to decide on to catch up and go have a good time. Navy Pier and Fisherman's Wharf are both kind of lame.... Disney and theme parks would be at the bottom of my list. I'm sure the national parks are great but not really my thing.
