San Francisco's average income is 1/3 larger than Louisville but the houses there cost 5 times as much. That makes no sense
Why do you think the foreclosure rates are so high out there? People are leveraged to their eyeballs to live in tiny houses.
I live in Birmingham, which is ranked 33rd in terms of income. At the same time, Alabama has the country's lowest property tax/income tax burden. So when we moved here, we actually found that we had much higher discretionary income while simultaneously enjoying a higher standard of living.

Actually,
Unlike much of California, San Francisco and most of the Bay Area has a relatively low foreclosure rate all things considered. Besides being high income, the region is one of the most financially stable in the country.
2007 Nest Egg Index-Cities with the most savings
In the third annual Nest Egg Index, we ranked the 500 top-performing communities based on their residents' personal savings and investing behavior. By measuring a dozen statistical factors - including participation in retirement savings plans, personal debt levels and home ownership - the Nest Egg Index shows the geographic regions where people are succeeding and facing difficulty with their nest eggs. In this year's results, communities that ranked highly in the Nest Egg Index continue to benefit from strong local housing markets and show a high propensity toward saving and investing in retirement vehicles such as 401(k) or pension plans. And while these communities had higher costs of living than the national average, nineteen out of the top 20 also had lower debt levels.

San Francisco has a lot of wealth. We all know that. For God's sake, do you need to post a new list every few days that is some kind of variation on the same theme. "Cities with most millionaires", "Cities with most billionaires", "Cities with most houses valued over $1 million", "Cities with the most people obsessed with rich people"...

This is why I post actual stats.
They speak for themselves, and leave no room for making ignorant statements about places I know very little about.

Seriously, and people in the Bay Area wonder why they are stereotyped as smug. It's like people there are actually proud of the fact they have the highest home prices in the country b/c they think it makes them cool or better. Whenever I go back home people talk about that crap so much; how much homes are worth, how much they are making, ect.... And they usually are talking about how much their parents house is worth b/c few people my age can actually afford to buy there. The sad thing is these incredibly overpriced homes are driving out many middle class people who make The Bay what it is and they are being replaced by a bunch of pretentious transplants who think they are so cool and special b/c they live in the Bay Area now and act like they are a native and own the place.

Puhleeze, we dont wonder at all.

In case you didnt notice, these are the most important issues this region faces. Home prices and Traffic. People talk about things that affect them.

Perhaps the question outta towners should ask themselves is how can our city copy theirs?

Actually for about 4 decades now, The Bay Area is "what it is" due to immigrants who came here and made their way up from nothing and became wealthy and are living the American Dream. Its not about getting by or barely making it, its about getting rich and becoming successful. Immigrant families now constitute the majority of the Bay Area's population.

Ha!
SF has been pretentious since the gold rush-our snobbery is multigenerational.
I dont mean to be a jerk but if your really from here, then you know that most people arent like that.
If you and others are actually proud of your smugness then that's pretty pathetic.

It's not that they talk about it, it's what and how they talk about it. People like to brag w/o seeming like they are bragging.

What outta towners? copy what? not sure what you are even trying to say here

Where did you read immigrants constitute the majority of the population? I have never seen that statistic. Last time I checked it was around 50% white. And just b/c you are an ethnic minority doesn't mean you are an immigrant. I'm mexican and filipino but my family has been in this country for 3 generations.
And it's not about getting "rich", it's about being successful and happy. Being rich and successful are too different things.
And what I was talking about originally anyways is the type of people that are leaving and the type of people that are replacing them. The real, down to earth middle class of the Bay Area are being pushed out and being replaced with yuppies and snobs.. And that is what I meant by the middle class who make the bay what it is and not the pretentious snobs of Marin County or SF.

I can't stand that "if your really from here" BS line I've heard before. Just b/c I point out the Bay Area's faults that people there don't like to admit and don't act like its better than everywhere else doesn't mean I am not from there; it's like if you don't have the typical Bay Area mentality then you must not be from there. I was born and raised in the Bay Area as were both of my parents and almost all of my family is there.
And yes I know not everyone is like that but a lot of people are and that mentality is more present there than anywhere else in CA. Also I grew up in Walnut Creek so hopefully that fact will help you understand where I am coming from. I have family in Vallejo since that's where my parents grew up and people there are not like as I describe nearly as much.
