I despise the term "Deep South" since it is almost always used in a negative context.

Seven of the ten least Catholic states in the country are in the South. Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Only one of the ten most Catholic states in the country is in the South. Louisiana.

Deep South to me:

Louisiana
Georgia
South Carolina
Mississippi
Alabama

I wouldn't hesitate at all to call Memphis as part of the deep south as well so I guess it's a pretty arbitrary distinction.

i see the Carolinas, GA, Va, and FL referred to as the South Atlantic states a lot now.

LA has a Cajun and Quebec influece that SC does not have. It makes no sense to say SC and LA culture is similar, and more similar than VA and NC.

I never thought of it as negative. That's just media garbage. Ignore those idiots they never get anything right.

I always thought of it as geographical primarily with some cultural and climatic connotations. Why not have a deep south, there's also a far north (sometimes called the great north forest).

How are Kentucky and Tennessee deep south?

Kentucky borders the north and Tennessee is home to multiple "mid-south" named businesses.
