When I think of the next Austin, I don't think of cities larger or near the size of Austin. I think of smaller cities, maybe like Lafayette, LA or Fayetteville, AR.
I was thinking the same thing and northwest Arkansas was the first region to come to mind for me also.
I would say Ann Arbor MI, but its proximity to the Detroit metro may actually discourage that. Ithaca NY could be another, if the people want it to grow at that pace.
Fayetteville and Northwest Arkansas seem like a decent contender. Great mix of outdoors, liberal community, and entrepreneurship. Here's a recent example of the local talent leveraging what's here into $$:
And yes, Austin is a one of a kind place. But there are attributes here that are definitely comparable to the Austin of 25-30 years ago. Start-ups are everywhere. The metro just topped 500k.
Overall I don't think so. The city doesn't revolve around its universities like Austin does with UT and it doesn't have nearly as large of a tech sector, although it's growing relatively fast.
I have always been intrigued by Fayetteville-Bentonville. Thanks for the pics and the glimpse into life there!
