"Soda" is strong in the Northeast, the West Coast, select points in the Midwest, and many large cities. "Pop" is popular in the Midwest ( inc the Great Plains), the Rockies, and even a little bit in western NY and PA ( not dominant, though). The South is known for calling all soft drinks "cokes"...

Pittsburgh is pop all the way. Having gone to Penn St this was a big issue when interacting with almost anyone else from east of PSU Lol.

I don't say pop....not even to my father.

After 40 years in the South, I also don't call everything a coke either. For me and just about every southerner that I encounter, it's either a soda or a soft drink.

No, I don't understand!

Let's say you want an orange flavored carbonated beverage.......

Some say....."I would like an orange soda", some say "I would like an orange pop".......

.....do you say "I would like an orange Coke." ?

Just doesn't make any sense at all. There is no such thing as orange flavored coke.

Since Coke, Pepsi and generic colas are are all coke to me, I prefer Coke. When I was younger I would have my periods preferring Pepsi and even RC some times but I'll stick with Coke. I just wish they'd put real sugar back in it like they still do in Latin America and sell it in glass bottles as well. They do at the local Mexican store/restaurant and there is a difference.

Dr Pepper, Mountain Dew and Sprite are all alternatives for me.

Here is how it goes.

Me to friend. You want a coke?
Friend to Me. Sure
Me to friend. I have Nehi Orange, Pepsi, Dr.Pepper, Sprite, RC Cola, and Coke.
Friend to Me. Nehi Orange will be fine.

Now it should be perfectly clear.

I came from eastern Wisconsin and still use 'soda' but here in eastern South Dakota it's 'pop' ... they also have this annoying habit of calling paved roads 'oil' roads, calling 'casseroles' a 'hot dish', 'donuts' are called 'rolls' out here, and 'lunch' is called 'dinner' out here.

As for which type of soda I prefer? Coke Zero, Diet Rite Pure Zero, Diet Mountain Lightning, and A&W root beer.. so sodas from all the major bottlers... the poll doesn't really make much sense.... or does not provide enough options if this is asking who our favorite bottler or type of soda is... my all time favorite soda is wal mart's 'diet mountain lightning' which tastes amazingly like regular mountain dew, much moreso than diet mountain dew does. Behind citris sodas I like diet root beers, so A&W comes in second place.

Here's what people call soda in various places around the US.
