Not at all--the Pacific NW is one of the most breathtaking beautiful regions of the country, both the forested and desert areas.

I would venture to say that the Pacific NW along with the northern Intermountain West (i.e., ID, MT, WY) is one of the least visited/traveled regions of the country, at least for most of the people living east of the Mississippi. So if Billy Bob in Birmingham or Ira in South Florida says the Pacific NW is overrated, their opinions don't carry much weight, as they've probably never been. Besides, most people in the East don't have the same level of appreciation for nature and natural beauty as people in the West, hence why they live in the East.
