My ex-husband was arrested on a drug related charge. Three weeks later they searched the house, seized his property & vehicles in my name. How do I get my license plates back from these vehicles so I can cancel the insurance on them?

I suggest you get a letter from the police that they seized those license plates and with that you might be able to cancel the insurance.

Why did they seize your cars?

why don't you ask your ex to go down to the prison workshop and make you duplicates of the ones that you need?

One of the vehicles I had paid for myself, but the other 3 were actually his on my insurance because it was cheaper. He was living at my address as a roommate. The police seized them as evidence of money laundering by him.

I would think you could call the insurance company and tell them that the vehicles have been taken and you need to cancel the insurance on them. The company should be able to tell you what you need to get the policies cancelled.
Also, it probably would not hurt to contact the License plate division of your state and ask tell them the vehicles have been taken so you no longer have physical possession of those license plates.

You don't have to tell the insurance company anything except to cancel the insurance. No explanation required, no documentation required.

I do it all the time, every time I drive to Mexico, I suspend the insurance for the time I am out of the country. If you are going to leave the car in the garage to take a vacation by plane, you can suspend the insurance during your absence (but not if you park on the street or in an outdoor parking lot).

You will get a pro-rated refund for the days it is suspended. If you don't reinstate it, you just get the unused part of your premium refunded.
