Mid-western IMO the Northeast is The Eastern tip of Lake Ontario, south to the Wyoming Valley of PA. After that Hockey is no longer the flagship sport of colleges (football is) the industry was steel/metal thing, to the east it was textiles/paper.

What about College Hockey crazy schools like Clarkson, St. Lawrence, RPI, Union, Quinnipiac, Yale, Boston U, Boston College, Northeastern, Vermont, Maine, Mass-Lowell, New Hampshire, Harvard, etc east of the Great Lakes?

Agree that steel was/is bigger in the western portion of the Interior Northeast.

Since Buffalo and Pittsburgh were settled before the Midwest wouldn't it be more accurate to ask if Chicago, St. Louis, etc. are more Eastern/North Eastern than Midwestern?

Mixed. I mean, I'd say they're northeast but they're kind of a different animal than New England and the BosWash. I definitely wouldn't say Buffalo is more similar to Boston than it is to Cleveland or Chicago, no way.

And that in itself calls their Northeasterness into question. Clearly the poll shows otherwise though. You are out to pick a fight, and I'm not interested in accepting your offer.
I think you are missing the point here. The flaw in your logic is equating "northeast" with "BosWash"....there is far more to the northeastern region of the US than that heavily developed narrow strip of land. The northeast does include areas further inland like Upstate NY, northern New England, and the western 2/3 of PA...including Erie, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo (as well as the other major Upstate metro areas). The BosWash corridor may be a dominating force in the region overall; but it is not the extent of the region.

I think you're misinformed...I am not saying the BosWash corridor is all there is to the Northeast. But one can't in common sense call something a part of the Northeast if the BosWash corridor has no connection to it. It's that simple.

I was saying that the Northeast has hockey as its premire College sport, then starting at the Penn state área it becomes all about football.

It's not that simple. Not at all. It's actually quite ridiculous. Take it from someone who actually lives in the northeast. I have no connection to any of the major BosWash corridor cities. Been to Boston a few times and NYC/Long Island maybe twice. Connected some flights at JFK and DCA and that's about it. I'd venture to guess that most people in my area of Upstate NY don't have much stronger connections to NYC/BosWash than that either. We are still northeasterners and still live in the northeast. That would be like me telling you that you aren't really a midwesterner because you don't travel to Chicago from St Louis every weekend or something similarly ridiculous. Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and Erie are all northeastern cities. Sure they share many similarities with other great lakes/midwest cities but that doesn't make then any less a part of the northeast than NYC. Boston and San Francisco have many similarities as well. Does that mean that San Francisco is a "New England city"?

No, the analogies you've made are just completely off. I'm simply telling you that the Northeast can't exist as a whole region if the whole parts of it don't at least share some commonalities. By your definition, you're as different from the BosWash as the Deep South, yet still call yourself the Northeast. Think what you want to. It's not my problem that somebody takes issue with how I view things. Nor is it your role to go forcing your views on mine. You are trying to start a fight, and I refuse to engage in it. You have to at least have some connection to the Bos-Wash to be in the Northeast, just like you have to have at least some connection to the central Midwest to be the Midwest. If you are telling me Buffalo has absolutely zero connection to the Bos-Wash, then there's no way you can argue it's the Northeast. And having Midwest connections makes them no less a part of the Northeast than NYC? THat I strongly disagree on. This would be like a mulatto arguing he is white or black. It does make a difference having connections to another region, and how you can't see that floors me. You obviously misunderstood some typo I made and you're going to accuse me of saying it deliberately...so be it. I will say it a little differently this time...the Bos-Wash corridor is ultimately the Northeast core....to be a part of the Northeast and have no connection, at all, in any way, shape, or form, culturally, lingusitically, or demographically, and still call yourself Northeastern is ridiculous. So the Northeast as it is defined satisfies at least some of these requirements. So Upstate New York actually has a lot more in common with NYC than first meets the eye.
