It seems that many people don't see to know the difference between NYC and NY state. I was wondering how many of the posters here knew that NYC is only one large city in NY state which is quite a large state with many other cities and towns.
Most people do know the difference. Uneducated persons don't. When I'm traveling out of state for work and tell the average college educated I'm from NY, they don't assume NYC. They ask which part of NY.
Somebody that lacks education and real world experience like a barista will assume NYC.

well New York has 1/3 of the state population, its more insane when I say im From Massachusetts and people automaticaly assume Im from Boston despite the city being around 9% of the stats population.

I believe NYC has half the state population, the metro area including areas upstate has 1/3.
When I lived in Iowa people had no idea NY State was big enough that one could be much further from NYC in NYS than most of Iowa population was from Chicago.

Funny, this works in the reverse as well. A lot of people in NYC don't know a whole lot about states outside of their own...from my experience. Not uneducated people, either, just people wrapped up in their own city, who can't see beyond the city borders.
