New York City is the largest city in the United States - with over 8.2 million people in its city limits. However, NYC's metro area is much larger than even that and includes major portions of New Jersey and Connecticut as well as downstate New York. By contrast, upstate New York has a vastly greater land area with a number of cities and towns which are much smaller than NYC and is also mainly rural, mountainous, filled with forests and many lakes.

So, given this, which do you associate more with NYC: NJ & CT or upstate New York?

NYC is associated with NJ & CT. Just watch the local news in NYC talk about the various tri-state issues (meaning NYC together with NJ & CT).

NYC is more associated w/NJ&CT.

Upstate New York is more associated with Pennsylvania. They have a lot in common.

There are many similarities, but I don't know about "associating" with PA. Upstate NY is basically like its own state within a state. I can see the NYC associating with CT and NJ thing due to being a part of the same metro and media market, along with other things.

I'd just assume give Westchester County to Connecticut and Long Island with the 5 boroughs to New Jersey. Upstate seems so far removed from everything in the Tri State region.

All 3 of them. Tristate area NY-NJ-CT. Upstate is the other half of the state that makes NYS great. Wouldn't change it for the world, NYS cities outside of the NYC area are much to underrated, Syracuse being my favorite of the bunch.

The culture and feel of NYC, NJ, and CT seem more similar than those of NYC and other areas of New York State.

Kind of a weird poll question, with a predictable answer. New York City and upstate New York have very little to do with each other culturally or geographically.

The only part of upstate NY that is associated with Pennsylvania would be the Southern Tier. The rest is all on its own.

Northern New Jersey and Western Connecticut are part of the New York City metro so of course I associate them with New York City more than Upstate New York.
