The only state I haven't stayed at least 72 hours in is Alaska. Some parts of the U.S. are obviously preferable to others, but seeing as I am a female in my 20s (and in my early 20s when I did most of my road tripping, AND did it all by myself)...
I can honestly say that nowhere produced a panic attack.
I haven't been 'scared' anywhere in the U.S.
Then again, I find East St. Louis fascinating, so maybe I'm just odd.
Get out, explore, see as much of the U.S. as you can. Stay away from Chain Restaurants and Chain Hotels. Get the full on, creepy roadside experience, grease, dust and all. It's better that way
Another tip I have for you though, is if you are getting to about half a tank of gas and see a gas station- FILL UP as through certain stretches of the U.S., particularly on the old highways / back roads it can sometimes feel like forever between gas stations. Also, AAA is a godsend. If you don't have it already, get it. They've bailed me out of strife more than once
