Hi there,

For the longest time we have been debating on the West Virginia Forum the issue of Charleston, WV and if it is a decent city for its size. Some of the points that have been brought up includethe quality its skyline, its downtown, architecture, urban feel, and its density. I decided to bring the issue before the nation, and see it from an outsiders perspective. It would be great if we could hear some different opinions on the matter, or just some thoughts on the city. Remember that it is has only about 50k, and a metro of 300k.

Any thoughts or comments would be great! Thanks

I think it packs a bit of a punch for a metro its size. Being the state capital definitely helps.

Helps and maybe hurts too. The city has nice buildings and urban streetscapes for a city its size, but during my first visit just a few months ago I wondered where everyone was. Tumbleweeds after 5PM. I walked around downtown each night seeking dinner and it was eerily quiet, except inside the mall.

If you could combine Charleston and Morgantown in one I bet that'd be a pretty cool city.

Yeah depends on where your at in downtown. Capital Street ususaly has a few people that are checking out one of the newer restaurants like Adelphia of Pies n Pints. Not alot of partys going on, but this is a family city so I'm not too concerned.

Charleston is a great little city. Almost like a miniature version of Pittsburgh.
Some nice restaurants and bars, City does shut down after 8pm, but the city rises for special events.

Plenty of Riverfront and river activities.

Charleston is a very progressive city, with a lot of true Southern Charm. Very gracious and well educated. I love the place.

How does being the state capital hurt it as far as this goes? This is true for lots of towns Charleston's size, capital or not.
