The circular pattern appears because sprinkler equipment is rotated around a central pivot point.
Here is what the equipment looks like.
The images I linked are from a company that makes center-pivot irrigation equipment (Valmont). You might find their
catalog interesting.
EDIT: Obviously this doesn't tell you what mechanism is used, but
