Exactly. More than anything, I think this thread (and this forum, in general) demonstrate how uninformed some people can be as to what makes places "Southern" or "Northern" in character and culture. This is in addition to neglecting to account for cultural differences within regions. That is, while I acknowledge prevailing cultures, neither the North nor the South are monolithic. This is despite how they're portrayed in the media and thought about in compartmentalized minds of people passing through on Interstate highways. I admit guilt on this too, so I don't mean to come off as holier-than-thou.
Also to nep321: I'm really not trying to come off as defensive or pick on you -- I also didn't want to de-rail this thread, although I know I've played a role in that -- but I think it's important to rectify cultural misconceptions that people may have about a places, especially it's based very limited experience and stereotyping. So, please don't take it personally.

I never saw this kind of behavior during all the years I lived in Simsbury, CT. We had quite a few transplants from the south and nobody really experienced this kind of problem. They all made friends in due time and were accepted by most of the local people. My next door neighbor was from PA and nobody looked at him like he was a leper.
If I'm not mistaken, I believe it was Bridgeport, CT.
Perhaps they thought he was taking a job away from a local during hard economic times. Wasn't CT losing industrial jobs in the 80's also? But then again, maybe he just got in the wrong crowd of people. I certainly don't think that is normal behavior for CT either. I was shocked at his story too, but I believe he is credible.
Eventually he moved to Charleston, SC. I thought SC is where he would face problems, but he said the people there were very kind and welcoming. He moved back to Beaver Falls, PA about 7 years ago.

You won't find this attitude in better educated, middle class or more affluent communities. Many working class people and especially those from a union background have a tendency to dislike newcomers because they fear they might lose their jobs.
One of my aunt's is from western PA and married my uncle from CT and they've lived in CT for decades. No problems at all.
Amazing what you can find when you get far enough from the cities. There were dirt roads like this in pretty much every southern state I've lived in. Most of them tended to be more orange or red than brown though.

I actually liked those videos. But there are lots of roads here in Michigan that look almost exactly the same. I kind of want to go out and make one of those videos now!
